If you ask anyone associated with Waud Capital Partners what sets the firm apart, the word “partnership” tends to surface early in the conversation. Founder Reeve Waud has built his entire investment philosophy around the idea that the right partnerships produce the best outcomes. But the concept has deeper roots than most observers might expect.
On August 20, 1988, Reeve Waud married Melissa Ann Wheeler at the First Church of Round Hill in Greenwich, Connecticut. Both were graduates of Middlebury College’s class of 1985, and the ceremony was led by the college’s president, Dr. Olin Robinson. The First Partnership
The wedding united two families with distinct backgrounds. Melissa’s parents, Russell Phillip and Dorothy Ann Wheeler, were based in Greenwich and Verbier, Switzerland. Reeve’s parents, Cornelius Byron and Corinna Roosevelt Reeve Waud, lived in Lake Forest, Illinois. Melissa had attended Miss Porter’s School and worked at Bergdorf Goodman; Reeve had earned his MBA at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern. That combination of shared education and complementary backgrounds laid the groundwork for a life built together in the Chicago area.
The Second Partnership
Five years after the wedding, Reeve founded Waud Capital Partners with just $5,000. The firm’s model—recruiting experienced CEOs before closing deals—was itself a bet on partnership. Acadia Healthcare and Responsible Investing
The partnership model is most visible in Acadia Healthcare, which Waud Capital formed in 2005. Acadia has grown into the nation’s foremost independent behavioral health provider, with more than 250 facilities. Reeve served as chairman of the board, helping guide Acadia Healthcare’s growth under Waud Capital’s leadership.
In 2024, the firm also published its first Responsible Investing report, with Reeve calling responsible investing “a core tenet of who we are.” It’s the same commitment to doing things the right way that has defined both of his most important partnerships.
